BURN OUT

Webster's dictionary defines "burn out" as physical or emotional exhaustion, often the result of stress.
Hmmmmm. Do any of us have any stress in our lives?
She leaned on her elbows, chin resting on her hands. "You know several years ago I suffered burn out."
What, you?
I couldn't believe it. She's one of the most out spoken people I know. Always lets you know what's on her mind. She doesn't keep anything inside, just blurts it all out. How could she be stressed? By taking on too much?
Yup! That'd be it.
When she described the things that were happening to her several years ago, not eating, not sleeping, etc, I could relate.
I sat for a moment taking it all in. She was right.
I had to slow down. Haven't so many people been "suggesting" I slow down?
One of the devotional books I read every morning suggested we take a day for ourselves. Wow, that's an idea! When I thought about it, I tried to imagine what I would do for a day, something I would enjoy. I thought about it that day, and for several days after that.
I knew I was in trouble when the only thing I could think of, that was fun, involved work.
Does that mean I'm a "workaholic"? Probably. But not to worry. I'm going to spend the day doing fun things.
As soon as I finish editing, answering email,.....
What do you do for fun? How do you unwind?
Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
I'm coming Lord!

I think I've been suffering from burn out in one form or another for the past 30 or 40 years! :-)

God bless and have a great weekend :-)

I spend time with friends. Generally, we go to the city and visit every thrift store and craft shop, then stop for lunch, eat cheese cake, then spend the rest of the day complaining about how we shouldn't have eaten that second slice of cake. LOL.

Ron, 30 - 40 years? That's a long time. I think you should come and join Joylene and I for a day out with her girlfriends!

Joylene,
You always make me laugh! AND my girlfriends and I do the same thing---talk each other into eating too much and then complain that we need a crane to lift us! ha ha---when is the next adventure? I'll be there!

Hi Katt -

I've discovered the world will not end if I don't get on the Internet for a few days. :)

Reading, spending time with family and friends, gardening, and poking around antique shops top my list of fun things.

Blessings,
Susan

Susan,
I'm finally realizing that too. The world didn't end when I got off the internet for a few hours yesterday. BTW, I just discovered yesterday that I wasn't getting your posts any more. I had problems with my computer several months ago, and I don't know if that's what happened. Any way, I'm following you again! Yeah!

I went through a major burnout/minor breakdown decades ago. It was so debilitating it took me over a year to climb back out of the depths, and scared me enough that I never wanted to go there again. I think it's important to recognize when feeling frazzled isn't going away, so we can take deliberate steps to head off something worse.

I need a fair amount of 'alone time' so when I'm feeling overwhelmed I need to retreat. A little reflection usually points out that I also need to take a few things permanently off my schedule. I get into that rut of believing I'm indispensable and have to volunteer for everything, and it's just not true. 'No' IS an acceptable answer.

Carol,
I don't think I recognized what was happening to me. I,too need a fair amount of time alone. That's probably why my DH and I get along so well. He's a golfer, and plays several days a week.
I need to remind myself to take time for me---reading a book Saturday did wonders for me!
Hugs and blessings to you my friend
