YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW

Have you ever read something, thought it was profound? Wrote it down so you could use it later? And then can't find it? No, I didn't think so. My nephew sent me an email yesterday about growing old gracefully. I think the email was referring to memory too. I'm sad to say I no longer have one, a memory that is. Anyway, Chip MacGregor's blog was full of wisdom yesterday. One of the things he talked about was character. I think as writers, we don't focus on our own character. We're too busy writing. As I read through the blog, I read the last few paragraphs a couple times. What he said made me think. It was about success. And I quote: "What really tests character is success. And the bigger the success the bigger the test." Chip MacGregor.com. I've never thought about success in those terms. I've thought about goals, and selling books. Or word counts. Writing the great American novel. Being asked to guest as a writer on John Grisham's blog. Most of the people I've known who have become successful are still the same person I always knew. Do you know anyone who changed because of success? I would like to think I would always be the same, yesterday, today and tomorrow.

I think as God catapults us to new levels there are changes. But, if we are putting Him first in all we say and do, in that regard we would be unchanged.
I have known people who changed with success, in not so nice ways. I also know people who grasp success as a way to be more of who they are, and those are the ones whose lives reflect HIm.

I think grounding is the key. Recognizing that blessings, success, talents, etc., are God's gifts to us will (or should) result in a sense of humility & appreciation. But what do I know.
